Biography

Mario Monti (Varese, 1943) has been a senator for life since 2011.
He was Prime Minister (2011-2013) and Minister of Economy and Finance (2011-2012), leading a government of national unity that overcame the financial crisis, initiated structural reforms and achieved crucial improvements in Eurozone governance. As European Commissioner for the Single Market (1995-1999) and for Competition (1999- 2004), he promoted market integration and laid the groundwork for tax coordination, and sanctioned major cases of abuse of dominance, anti-competitive mergers, and illegal state aid.

He was a professor of economics at the Universities of Trento, Turin and then Bocconi University, where he was Rector (1989 – 1994) and President (1994 – 2022). He currently serves as president of the Javotte Bocconi Institute.
