He is the Ronald Coase School Professor at the London School of Economics and Digital Fellow at the Initiative for the Digital Economy at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Until 2020, he was the Gordon Billard Professor in the Department of Economics at MIT and the Sloan Management School. He is a member of the British Academy, the Econometric Society, the NBER, the CEPR, and the Society of Labor Economists.
He has published over a hundred articles in many areas of economics, with a particular focus on firm performance and the causes and consequences of innovation. He has won the Yrjö Jahnsson Award (2019, the European equivalent of the Clark Medal), the HBR-McKinsey Award (2018), the European Investment Bank Award (2014), and the Arrow Prize (2011). In 2017, he was awarded an OBE by the Queen for services to public policy and economics.
