The world is in crisis. The prolonged period of low average income growth has led many Western citizens to believe that their economic prospects will be worse than those of their parents. Their frustration has fueled authoritarian movements that are eroding our liberal democracies from within, while they are also threatened militarily from the outside. However, decline is not an inevitable fate. Sustainable growth that is environmentally friendly and socially equitable is possible. A new growth plan should focus on long-term investments in knowledge, people, and infrastructure, along with radical changes in our institutions and policies.
